We always direct people to Blue/Bear lake for fishing and recreation, however many are not fully aware of Lathrop State Park. Horseshoe and Martin Lake offer a different fishing experience AND are boat friendly! In a short 30 minute drive from your rental cabin in Cuchara, you can bring your boat, let your kids enjoy the swim beach, birdwatchers can experience different species of birds and water fowl and try out some hiking trails.
The Great Sand Dunes is about an hour and a half from your Vacation Rental in Cuchara. There's enough to make this a full day or multiple days.

Zapata Falls has always been on my "must see" list. This popular short hike is located on BLM (US Bureau of Land Management) land south of the Sand Dunes off of Highway 150. It is a good option for summer afternoons when sand surface temperatures are high. Simply driving to the trailhead provides an excellent view of the entire dunefield and San Luis Valley.
If you can manage to visit Zapata Falls in the Spring or early summer, you may even experience them frozen in place!
